FAU Presents Lecture on Thomas Paine’s Influence on Current U.S. Foreign Policy
The Jack Miller Forum in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents “Thomas Paine’s American Creed in the Age of Globalization” on Thursday, March 18 at 1 p.m. The lecture, which will be presented by Thomas Walker, professor of international relations at Dartmouth College, will take place in the Student Union, and is free and open to the public.
This lecture will address how questions of free trade, democratization, intervention, and globalization relate to long-held American values of optimism and liberty. Walker will rely on the international thought of Thomas Paine, one of the leading voices of the American Founding, to provide insight to many of the quandaries facing American foreign policy in this age of globalization.
Thomas Walker teaches international relations at Dartmouth College. With colleagues at Rutgers Center for Global Security and Democracy, he co-authored Presence, Prevention, and Persuasion, a study on naval presence, published by Lexington Press (2004). His articles have also appeared in Perspectives on Politics, International Studies Quarterly, The Naval War College Review, International Studies Review and International Studies Notes. He is currently working on an edited volume of Thomas Paine’s pamphlets on international politics.
